Core Hospitality strengthens sustainable hotel development: Nordhavn hotels achieve DGNB certification

April 8th, 2026

The building housing Residence Inn and Fairfield by Marriott Copenhagen Nordhavn has now been DGNB-certified.

Core Hospitality is proud to announce that Residence Inn and Fairfield by Marriott in Nordhavn have now achieved the prestigious DGNB certification. This recognition is a testament to a strong focus on sustainability in the construction of the property and marks a clear endorsement of the hotels’ efforts to maximize ESG initiatives in both design and construction in Nordhavn.

“Guests shouldn’t have to choose between comfort and responsibility. The best sustainable solutions are those already integrated into the building and operations, allowing guests to simply check in and relax,” says Kristian Haaber, Brand & Development Manager at Core Hospitality.

Sustainability in practice: Energy optimization, water savings, and biodiversity

To achieve the DGNB certification, approximately 800 m² of solar panels have been installed on the roof, expected to produce up to 127 MWh of electricity annually. At the same time, the building is connected to Nordhavn’s energy-efficient district heating and cooling system. A Building Management System continuously optimizes heating and lighting, while energy-efficient LED lighting across the hotels further reduces energy consumption.

The DGNB-certified property has also been developed with a focus on reducing resource consumption in daily operations — among other things through low-flow water fixtures such as taps and showerheads — without compromising the guest experience.

Roof areas not covered by solar panels have been established with sedum vegetation, and the shared courtyard between the two hotels features wild planting that contributes to biodiversity and rainwater management.

Sustainability continues in operations

Core Hospitality is also working with ESG initiatives in daily operations. The hotels use refillable bath products in large bottles, reducing the use of single-use plastic.

In addition, the hotels are testing digital meters and a tracking platform to gain a more detailed overview of water and energy consumption, thereby strengthening the data foundation for future improvements. The next step in the journey toward more sustainable hotel operations will be to submit a Green Key application this year.

“The DGNB certification is an important milestone — but the work doesn’t stop here. ESG is not a project you complete. It’s a way of operating hotels, where we continuously refine our data, operations, and the solutions that make a real difference in practice,” says Kristian Haaber, Brand & Development Manager at Core Hospitality.
