Artists wanted at new hotel in Tromsø, Norway

August 29th, 2022

Edit on September 14th, 2022: Wall number five is removed from the project, leaving five walls available. Below graphics have been updated accordingly, too.

Moxy Hotels is opening in Tromsø next year and is looking for artists that want to decorate the walls at the international hotel. The five walls measure between five and 22 sqm.

Moxy Hotels has always invited artists to decorate its walls throughout the world. The operator of Moxy Tromsø, Core Hospitality, is now searching for artists that are interested in immortalizing their art at the upcoming international lifestyle hotel.

The art at Moxy Hotels embodies a fun and innovative business approach to curating art and style, a match with the Moxy brand itself,” says Kristian Haaber, Brand Manager at Core Hospitality. “We create a platform for emerging artists to explore their creativity and showcase their work. The program also reinvents the conventional hotel guest experience and encourages new conversations around art and culture.”

Moxy Tromsø interior design

Marriott International’s northernmost hotel location will be Moxy Tromsø next year. The hotel will embrace its surroundings, offering public spaces on the top floor with decorative installations that interpret the northern lights and ice crystal reflections. The wall art should seek inspiration from the interior as explained by the interior architect.

The interior of Moxy Tromsø draw inspiration from the surrounding landscape with fjords, mountains, snow, and ice, all in correspondence with old local traditions in arts and crafts, for example in embroidery. The traditional folk dress is at the heart of our choice of colors and material palette, which ranges from blue colors, such as indigo, cobalt, and icy blue, to warmer colors, such as purple, brown, and a deep red. We want the interior to amplify the wall art and vice versa to create a holistic guest experience within the lounge areas. Combined, the interior and artwork should create a fun and playful Moxy atmosphere,” says Belinda Kjærsgaard, Architect at Mette Fredskild Studio.

Unique opportunity for artists

All types of art are welcome to apply to this unique opportunity. The Moxy brand allows the walls to be decorated by any form of art and with any material. The selected artists will get the opportunity to exhibit their work in the permanent art collection.

The selected artists will be given 10 weekdays to complete the installations just before the opening in May 2023. The artists must make themselves available during this time to complete their work before the opening. Core Hospitality will contribute by paying the production costs, in principle offering a free canvas for the artists, as well as an agreed fee for the decorating assignment.

Open application

All artists are welcome to submit their proposition of a creative idea for the Moxy Tromsø project. The only requirement is that they must be original designs. To be considered, artists must submit the following material to the Brand Manager, Kristian Haaber, at kh@corehospitality.dk no later than October 31st:

  • A description of the subject/theme of the art installation and a visual sketch (JPEG/PNG)
  • Conceptual inspiration to visualize vision
  • An outlined plan with choice of materials and a budget
  • Examples of previous work (portfolio)

When the sketches have been received, they will be evaluated by Core Hospitality based on concept, innovativeness, visualization, and description. After this, the applications are sent to Marriott International for approval. If they are approved, the sketches will go through a revision process in collaboration between the artist, Core Hospitality, and Marriott International.

Below, you will find illustrations of the available art walls and mood boards from other Moxy Hotels and specifically for the Moxy Tromsø project. You can also familiarize yourself with the Moxy brand at moxyhotels.com.

Art wall details

The six walls are split in two sections of the lounge areas.

The first five stand together in a combination of narrow walls in the unplugged lounge area, separated by floor-to-ceiling windows with mountain views. They can be completed by one artist or several, either offering the opportunity to be five individual stories, different objects with a red thread throughout, or as one piece jumping across the walls. Combined, the walls measure 30 sqm, but the artwork should not fill the entire walls and should not be completely square. Individually, the following measurements apply for the walls:

  1. H3.7 x W1.8 (6.6 sqm)
  2. H2.4 x W2.5 (6.0 sqm)
  3. H2.4 x W3.1 (7.4 sqm)
  4. H3.7 x W2.8 (10.3 sqm)

The sixth wall is one large area, located in the energetic NOW lounge area, surrounded by large windows that offer amazing views of mountains towards the east and the sea and airport towards the west. The wall measures 22.4 sqm, but most of it is covered by a wooden step-up bench. The mountain-like furniture in front of thew all should be considered a pedestal for the wall art.

  1. H3.2 x W7.0 (22.4 sqm)
